Socotra Island is a small Muslim country haven for nature lovers. Its beaches and birds are a paradise, and it’s conflict-free. If you are considering a vacation to Socotra, here are a few facts about the country you should know.
It’s a Muslim country:
Socotra is an island off the coast of east Africa governed by the nation of Yemen. The island was once inhabited by people from the Ancient Assyrian Church of the East (also known as the Nestorian Church). Christians from this church spread to India, China, and Mongolia, where they eventually founded Christian communities. The Assyrian church flourished in these lands for centuries.
It’s a paradise for birds:
Socotra is an island in the Arabian Gulf that is home to exotic birds and many rare plant and animal species. The island is home to the dragon’s blood tree, a rare source of dyes and varnishes used in medieval ritual magic. The branching structure of the tree is reminiscent of a flying saucer.
The island is one of the most biodiverse places on Earth. There are over 800 species of plants, including 307 endemic species. There are also 11 species of birds unique to the island. Most reptiles and molluscs found on Socotra are also endemic to this area.
It’s a great place for diving:
If you want to take a diving trip and explore untouched reefs and clear waters, then Socotra is the place to go. While the island has few tourist facilities, the inhabitants are welcoming and friendly towards tourists. In addition, the waters are relatively clear, and you can easily spot a variety of marine species.
There are two main scuba diving sites on Socotra. The first one is the Diharmi sea reserve, where you can see eighty types of coral and over 150 species of fish. You can dive as deep as 50 meters, and the seabed is particularly interesting because of a huge mountain at the bottom of the sea. Another dive site is Rosh, which is home to a spectacular coral reef.
It’s conflict-free:
The island of Socotra is located in Yemen and has a population of approximately 50,000. It has been considered a separate entity from the mainland for centuries but is currently controlled by UAE and Saudi Arabia. The islands have recently undergone several changes, including government transfers. Contact a tour operator or travel agency if you are interested in traveling to Socotra.
